About the Exhibit
Each year, the museum of the American Quilter's Society features the exhibition "New Quilts from and Old Favorite", which is the product of an international contest.  A traditional quilt block is chosen, and quilters are challenged to create an innovative, original quilt based on the block.  In 2004 "Monkey Wrench" was the block chosen.

"Monkey Wrench", which originated about 1858, has two classic versions - "Snail's Trail" and "Churn Dash".  Some of the quilts highlight one version; some highlight both.  Quilters were free to stretch, curve, or visually bend the Monkey Wrench, but it still had to remain recognizable to the judges.  Entries were judged on design, use of materials, interpretation of the theme, and technical excellence by three judges.  Contestants came from throughout the United States and around the world.  Thus the exhibition offers 17 very contemporary responses to the honored history and traditions of quilting in America.
