About the Exhibit
In February 2005, Arts on Grand hosted a traveling exhibition from the Museum of the American Quilters Society themed around the Monkey Wrench quilt block.  With all the interest that an MAQS exhibit generated, AOG thought it might be fun to host a Mystery Quilt contest with the local Mainstreet businesses participating by distributing quilt clues, or by donating a prize.  The contest came together with the help of Peg Deffer who designed the contest's clues and quilt blocks.  One of these designs represents a brand new quilt block pattern (to our knowledge) and was named after a location in the heart of Spencer's Mainstreet- "4th and Grand".
The quilts on display are from throughout the area, and were created by those who participated in not only the AOG sponsored Mystery Quilt contest, but also by those who participated in other mystery quilt contests.
Also on display are quilts sewn by Mabel Murphy, in whose memory the exhibit is sponsored.  Quilting since 1915, starting when she was just 8 years old, Mrs. Mabel Murphy constructed over 90 quilts in her lifetime.  Each of her quilts tells a story.  Recognized by the National Geographic in January 1991 in an article titled "Master of Traditional Arts" and in the exhibit titled "Lifetime of Love" at the William Woods College of Fine Arts, Arts on Grand is proud to have the opportunity of sharing her quilts with the public.
