Hot glass is
defined glass that is in a liquid, molten state. A granular mixture
of silica grains, soda ash, limestone and other minerals, called
"Batch", is poured into a furnace where it slowly begins its
transformation. At 2400 degrees Fahrenheit it starts to melt into a
syrupy mass that cooks for 8 hours (cooled 200 degrees lower then working
temperature to get the air bubbles out), then heated to 2150 degrees so
that it can be worked into shapes that swim with color or are kept crystal
clear. |

Jesse Bogenrief
began his journey toward becoming a 'Master Glass Worker' in the spring of
2003 after attending two workshops at the Crystal Forge, a glass blowing
studio in Omaha, Nebraska. Master Glass Workers have a minimum of 10
years experience working with the hot glass medium . Since that time
he has learned to build a furnace, glory hole, and annealer, components
necessary to the process, along with a few tricks as well.
Jesse works out of Bogenrief Studios in Spencer, IA, where he can be seen
demonstrating his skill at working molten glass into vases, bowls, lamps
and other objects d'Art.
